Good experimentalists know how to calculate! In our quest to engineer and explore exotic materials, we often need to develop new techniques- on these occasions we grind out theory like the best of 'em (probably not the best of 'em-- we are experimentalists, first and foremost!); recent examples include a Floquet theory of (twisted, aspheric and non-paraxial) optical resonators and a new approach to stabilization of incompressible photonic quantum materials at non-zero chemical potential.
